Japan vs North America: Where the Snow Actually Falls
Canada holds world rank 3. The best in the US sits at 28. Japan takes 60 of the top 100. A measured comparison for skiers from the US and Canada.
North Americans get a version of the Japan pitch that leans hard on the word “Japow”, and it tends to skip the comparison that matters: is it actually deeper than what you already have at home?
Mostly yes. But North America does better here than Europe does, and the honest answer has some nuance.
The numbers
We measured all 3,108 ski areas on earth the same way — daily snowfall over the last three seasons, divided by three, with winter defined per hemisphere.

Canada is genuinely competitive. Shames Mountain — a small non-profit co-op outside Terrace, British Columbia — is the third snowiest ski area on the planet. The BC coast range does the same trick Japan does: cold air, warm ocean, mountains close to the water.
The US is a step behind on raw volume. Mt. Bachelor at world #28 is the best of it. The Cascades and the Wasatch do well; the Rockies get less snow than their reputation suggests, and make up for it with cold, dry air that keeps what falls in excellent condition.
Only 23 Japanese resorts beat Mt. Bachelor. Only one beats Shames. So the correct claim is not “Japan buries North America”. It is that Japan has far more of it: 60 in the world top 100 against 27 for the US and Canada combined.
What the ranking does not capture
Vertical. This is where North America wins outright and it is not close. Whistler has 1,530 m of continuous vertical. Jackson Hole has 1,262 m. The longest run in Japan, at Myoko Suginohara, gives about 1,100 m, and most Japanese areas offer a third of that. If you measure a ski day in vertical feet, Japan will disappoint you.
Terrain size. Vail alone has more skiable acreage than most Japanese resorts have combined with their neighbours. Japanese ski areas are small and numerous rather than large and linked.
Steepness and alpine terrain. Japan’s mountains are forested to near the summit. There is very little above-treeline riding of the kind you get at Snowbird or Kicking Horse. Japan’s signature is tree skiing in deep snow, on moderate pitch.
Snow quality is different, not simply better. Utah’s marketing is not wrong — the Wasatch produces exceptionally dry snow because the air is cold and continental. Hokkaido’s snow is comparably dry. Honshu’s snow, where the biggest totals are, is heavier: more water in it, because it came off a warm sea a hundred kilometres away.
Where Japan clearly wins
Frequency. In Niigata and Nagano in January, overnight snowfall is the normal state rather than a lucky break. You do not plan a trip around a storm cycle; you assume it.
Price. A day pass at most Japanese resorts runs a third to a half of a Colorado walk-up ticket. Slopeside accommodation, food and beer follow the same ratio.
Crowds outside the famous names. Niseko in February is busy and full of Australians. Drive two hours to almost anywhere else and it is not.
Onsen. Ending a day in an outdoor hot spring while it snows on your head has no North American equivalent, and it is more of the appeal than people admit before they have tried it.
Practical routes
- Hokkaido (Niseko, Rusutsu, Furano) — the driest snow, the most English spoken, the easiest first trip. Fly into New Chitose.
- Nagano (Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen) — biggest vertical, easiest from Tokyo by train, most varied terrain.
- Niigata (Myoko, Yuzawa, Seki Onsen) — the highest snowfall totals anywhere in the ranking, the least developed for foreign visitors, the cheapest.
If you fly into Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Yuzawa in about 80 minutes. That is a shorter door-to-lift time than most Denver-to-Summit-County drives on a Saturday.
How this was measured
Source: Open-Meteo historical data from the ERA5 reanalysis. Daily snowfall summed across the last three completed seasons and divided by three, with hemispheric winter definitions so that southern resorts are measured during their own season.
Absolute values carry error — reanalysis grid cells do not sit at resort elevation. The ordering is what holds, because all 3,108 resorts went through the same process. Resort-reported totals cannot be compared with each other at all.
