Japan vs the Alps: An Honest Look at the Snow
Austria has no resort in the world's snowiest 300. Japan has 123. Here is what that does and does not mean for European skiers.
If you learned to ski in the Alps, the pitch for Japan usually arrives as a photograph: someone chest-deep, spraying snow over their head, grinning. It is a good photograph. It is not an argument.
Here is the argument, in numbers.
The uncomfortable table
We measured snowfall at all 3,108 ski areas on earth using the same method. These are the snowiest resorts each European country has:

Japan has 123 resorts in the world’s top 300.
Austria — the country that arguably invented modern alpine skiing, that has St. Anton and Kitzbühel and Ischgl — does not place a single resort in the snowiest 300 on earth. Its very best, Diedamskopf, sits at number 375. 145 Japanese ski areas get more snow than it.
Now the part that table does not tell you
Snowfall is one variable. It is not the same as good skiing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Austria’s advantage is altitude and reliability. Its resorts run high, often above 2,000 m, with glaciers that hold snow into summer. A resort does not need 300 cm falling from the sky if what does fall stays cold and stays put. Japan’s ski areas are low — Okutadami Maruyama, the world’s snowiest, tops out at 1,160 m — which is only possible because the snow arrives in such volume and at such consistently low temperatures.
Austria’s lift infrastructure is a generation ahead. Heated gondolas, linked valleys, hundreds of kilometres of piste under one ticket. Japan’s areas are mostly small and separate. Hakuba Valley links ten, and that is the exception.
Austria’s above-treeline terrain has no Japanese equivalent. Japan’s mountains are forested nearly to the summit. This is why tree skiing is the defining Japanese experience and why big open alpine faces are not.
And the vertical is smaller. European skiers used to 1,500 m of continuous descent will find most Japanese runs short. Myoko Suginohara, which has the longest in Japan, offers about 1,100 m.
So what is actually on offer
What Japan sells is not “better skiing than Austria”. It is volume and consistency of soft snow, in a form the Alps structurally cannot produce.
The mechanism is geographic. Cold air leaves Siberia, crosses the warm Sea of Japan picking up moisture for a few hundred kilometres, then hits the mountains of Honshu and Hokkaido and unloads. Sea and mountain sit within tens of kilometres of one another. In the Alps, the Atlantic is a long way from Innsbruck.
The practical difference is how often you get a good day. In the Alps, a powder day is an event you plan around and often miss. In Niigata and Nagano in January, snow overnight is the default condition rather than the exception.
Where to go if you are coming from Europe
For a first trip, the honest recommendations are the places with enough infrastructure that jet lag and language do not ruin the week:
- Hakuba Valley (Nagano) — the closest thing to an Alpine setup. Ten linked areas, real vertical, the 1998 Olympic downhill. Best served by English-speaking staff.
- Nozawa Onsen (Nagano) — a genuine village with public hot springs, not a purpose-built resort. Feels closer to a Tyrolean village than anywhere else in Japan.
- Myoko (Niigata) — the biggest vertical in the country and consistently among the snowiest places on earth, an hour from Hakuba.
If you want the extreme end of the snowfall table, look at Niigata: Seki Onsen, Charmant Hiuchi, ARAI. These are small, and most have no English website. They are also in the world’s top fifteen for snowfall.
How this was measured
Daily snowfall summed over the last three completed seasons, divided by three. Winter defined per hemisphere — December to March in the north, June to September in the south. Source is Open-Meteo historical data from the ERA5 reanalysis.
The absolute centimetre values carry error, because reanalysis works on a grid and grid elevation does not match real slopes. The ranking survives that, because every resort went through the identical process. Resort-published snowfall figures are not comparable to each other at all — different measurement points, different rounding, and a commercial incentive to be generous.
