Half of Switzerland's Ski Lifts Drag You Uphill. In Japan, 176 of 184 Ski Areas Have None.

Counted across 2,888 ski areas: drag lifts are 51% of Swiss lifts, 50% of French, 75% of Swedish — and 1% of Japanese. For a snowboarder that is the difference between 49% of lifts being comfortable and 99%.

Ask a European snowboarder what is different about riding in Japan and you will hear about the snow. Ask them again after a week and something smaller comes up: they have not queued for a T-bar once.

We now hold the lift inventory of 2,888 ski areas, taken from OpenStreetMap, tagged by type. The pattern behind that observation is stark enough to be worth writing down.

The split, by country

Every ski area here has at least ten marked runs, so these are real ski areas rather than single-lift hills. “Dragged” means any lift that pulls you along the snow rather than carrying you: T-bars, J-bars, platters, rope tows.

Japan runs 92% of its uphill capacity on chairlifts. Sweden runs 75% of its on a rope you hold, a bar you straddle or a disc you sit against.

For a snowboarder, that is the whole story

A drag lift assumes two independent feet. A snowboarder has one board, fixed at an angle, and has to ride a surface lift sideways with the back foot loose. It is learnable and it is never comfortable, and on a steep or icy drag track it goes wrong.

In Sweden, three lifts in four will drag you. In Japan, one in a hundred.

It is not a rounding error — it is an absence

Of the 184 Japanese ski areas in this count, 176 have no drag lift of any kind. The eight that do have one or two, and they are the exception in every case:

Compare that with the other end of the scale. Sälen in Sweden runs 39 dragged lifts against 3 chairlifts. Les Saisies in France runs 47 against 28 chairlifts.

Hakuba Happo-One, one of Japan’s largest, runs 20 chairlifts and one gondola. Nothing else.

Why Japanese has no word for it

English has “drag lift” and “surface lift” as everyday terms. Japanese does not have a settled equivalent. There are loanwords for the individual machines — Tバー, ロープトウ — but no common collective noun, because there has never been a category of thing to name.

We can measure the absence but not its cause, so what follows is reasoning rather than evidence.

Two explanations fit. The first is snow. A drag lift works by pulling you along a groomed track; deep, soft snow makes that track hard to hold and easy to destroy, and Japan gets more snow at lower elevation than anywhere in this table. The second is timing. Most Japanese ski areas were built or rebuilt during the boom of the late 1980s, when chairlifts and gondolas were affordable and the customer was a city day-tripper in rented gear. Europe’s networks grew from the 1930s onward, when a rope and a motor was what a village could afford, and the old lines were kept because they still work.

Neither explanation is testable with what we hold. Both are consistent with what we measured.

What to do with it

If you snowboard and you are choosing between Japan and the Alps, this belongs in the decision. It is not the main reason to go — the snow is — but it is a real difference in how a day feels, and nobody puts it in a brochure.

If you are teaching someone to ride, it matters more. A beginner’s week in Sweden includes learning a surface lift. A beginner’s week in Japan does not.

If you are coming to Japan from Europe, expect fewer lifts overall. The median Japanese ski area here runs 7 lifts; the median French one runs 12, and the median Swedish one 13. Japanese ski areas are smaller and simpler, and they carry you on all of them.

How this was measured

Lift types come from OpenStreetMap’s aerialway tag, counted within a radius of each ski area’s centre that scales with its mapped size. These are not the operators’ own published figures and they will not always match. What makes the comparison meaningful is that every country here was counted by the identical method.

Two limits worth stating. First, OpenStreetMap is drawn by volunteers and the density of that drawing varies by country, so absolute lift counts are approximate. Second — and this one cuts against the headline — Japan shows only 2% conveyor lifts against 19% in the United States, which suggests short beginner lifts may be under-recorded in Japan. If short lifts are under-recorded, short drag lifts would be too.

That caveat does not rescue the comparison for Europe, because European drag lifts are not beginner infrastructure. Sälen’s 39 and Les Saisies’ 47 are how those mountains move people around. The gap between 1% and 51% is far larger than any plausible mapping error.

Ski areas with fewer than ten marked runs are excluded throughout, and so are countries with fewer than ten qualifying ski areas.
