These figures come from estimates that we correct region by region against the records of nearby weather stations. Error at any single ski area remains, so read this as a broad difference between regions rather than a ranking — the order of two adjacent regions means nothing. Note also that the heaviest snowfall in Japan by volume falls on the Sea-of-Japan side of Honshu; Hokkaido is famous not for how much snow falls but for how dry it is.

When does the ski season start in Japan?
Hokkaido's big resorts (Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano) plan to open on 28 November 2026, Hakuba Happo-One on 1 December and Shiga Kogen on 5 December, according to each resort. Openings depend on the snow. All opening dates for 2026/27 →
