Ski Japan from Taipei: Direct Flights and the Nearest Deep Snow

Starlux lists nonstop Taipei–Sapporo flights. From New Chitose, Sapporo Kokusai and Kiroro average 331 cm of snow a winter; Niseko is 82 km away at 289 cm.

You can fly from Taipei to the snow without changing planes. Starlux and China Airlines list nonstop flights from Taipei to Sapporo New Chitose (CTS), the airport that serves the Hokkaido ski areas below. From the airport, the nearest measured deep-snow areas are Sapporo Kokusai and Kiroro, each averaging 331 cm a winter in our 12-season data. Niseko Grand Hirafu is 82 km away by straight line and averages 289 cm.

The direct flight

Starlux and China Airlines both list Taipei–Sapporo flights on their official route pages. Starlux shows Taoyuan (TPE) and Songshan (TSA) on the Taipei side and New Chitose (CTS) in Hokkaido; China Airlines shows TPE–CTS. The timetable changes with the season, so check the pages for your dates and for whether a particular service is winter-only.

These are the two airlines whose official route pages we could check. Other carriers may also fly the route; we have not listed them without an official page.

From New Chitose to the snow

The table gives a selection of the better-known Hokkaido ski areas within 100 km of New Chitose that average at least 190 cm in our data; it is not every area that meets those conditions. Distances are straight-line from the airport; the road is longer. Snowfall is the December–March total averaged over the 12 winters from 2014/15 to 2025/26.

Straight-line distances from New Chitose Airport (42.775°N, 141.692°E). Snowfall from ERA5 via Open-Meteo, averaged over 12 winters; world rank among the 3,069 ski areas on this site.

The closest snow is not always the deepest. Nakayama Pass and Sapporo Teine are the shortest transfers, but Sapporo Kokusai and Kiroro carry roughly a quarter more snow in the same data. Niseko and Furano sit further east or west and are not day-trip distances from the airport in the way Sapporo Teine is.

Why the numbers look lower than the resort’s own

Our snowfall figures come from a weather model, not from the resorts’ snow stakes. In Japanese mountains the model reads about six tenths of observed snowfall, and in Hokkaido it reads even lower. That is why Kiroro can show 331 cm here while the resort reports much deeper totals.

Use the figures to compare places measured the same way, not as a forecast of the snow you will stand on. The method and its limits are set out on how we measure.

Which one to choose

  • Shortest transfer, reasonable snow: Sapporo Teine or Nakayama Pass.
  • Most snow in our data near the airport: Sapporo Kokusai or Kiroro.
  • Deepest reputation and the longest transfer: Niseko Grand Hirafu.
  • Quieter, with dry Hokkaido snow: Rusutsu or Furano.

Before booking, check two things that change every winter: the opening date and what has actually fallen. Our 2026/27 opening dates are confirmed from official announcements, and where it is snowing now is updated daily.

Questions people ask

Is Taipei–Sapporo a year-round route? The airline’s timetable decides that, not this article. Check the official page for your dates; some services are seasonal.

Do I need to fly to Tokyo first? Not for the Hokkaido ski areas in this article. New Chitose is the gateway, and the resorts above are within 100 km by straight line.

Is the snow better in Hokkaido than in Honshu? It is colder and drier, and less likely to turn to rain. The Sea of Japan side of Honshu gets more snow by volume. Our snow-quality ranking compares the two on the same measurements.

How many ski areas does the site cover? 3,069 worldwide, including 397 in Japan, all measured with the same snowfall method. The full ranking is on the world snowfall ranking.

About the numbers

  • Snowfall is the December–March total from ERA5 reanalysis (via Open-Meteo), averaged over 2014/15–2025/26. It is a model value, not a resort measurement.
  • The model reads about 60% of observed snowfall in Japanese mountains, and lower in Hokkaido. Use the figures for comparison.
  • Straight-line distances are calculated from New Chitose Airport (42.775°N, 141.692°E) to each ski area’s coordinates. Road distances are longer.
  • World ranks are from the same 12-winter data set of 3,069 ski areas.
