Which Ski Resort Gets the Most Snow in the World?
We measured snowfall at all 3,112 ski areas on earth the same way. The answer is a small resort in Niigata, Japan — and 59 of the top 100 are Japanese.

Niseko is 416th in the world for snowfall. Zermatt is 421st, Jackson Hole 802nd, Aspen 1,439th. Measured identically across 3,112 ski areas, the names everyone books and the places it actually snows turn out to be two different lists.

We checked the 2026/27 adult day ticket on each resort's own site. At the window it runs from ¥7,000 at Akakura Kanko to ¥16,700 at Rusutsu. Buying online saves up to ¥3,500, and the first and last weeks of the season cost up to half. For those cheap spring weeks, we add which way each resort's slopes face.

Opening dates checked on each resort's own site: Sapporo Teine on 21 November, Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano on 28 November, Happo-One, Sahoro and Tomamu on 1 December, Shiga Kogen on 5 December, Myoko and Minamiuonuma from 17 to 19 December. In Hokkaido, December already brings about as much snow as January. In Nagano and Niigata it brings about four-fifths.

Across twelve winters of snowfall measured the same way in both countries, Japan's leanest season (2015/16, 171 cm at the middle ski area) is about what a typical Australian winter delivers (180 cm), and 83 Japanese ski areas average more than any Australian resort got in its best year.

Across 11 winters at 395 Japanese ski areas, March delivers 45 cm against January's 82 cm. Niigata keeps 38% of its January; Hokkaido keeps 66%. But Niigata's 38% is 76 cm and Hokkaido's 66% is 38 cm, which reverses the advice.

Season snowfall totals do not tell you how often it snows. We counted the days that deliver 5 cm or more at all 395 Japanese ski areas. Hokkaido's median is 12 days a winter and Honshu's is 21 — and Honshu rains almost three times as often.

We extended our snow-quality measurement to all 59 ski areas below the equator. The high Andes are drier than most of Japan. New Zealand and Australia get rain on a third of winter days. And the southern hemisphere's snowiest resorts are mostly not its best ones.

Over twelve winters Las Leñas averaged 426 cm to Niseko's 289, and its worst winter (196 cm) was still deeper than Niseko's worst (166 cm). What Niseko has is colder snow — it falls at −6.2 °C against −3.2 °C — and a calendar most people can actually use.

Four of the world's ten snowiest ski areas sit in one Niigata valley. In that same valley the temperature when it snows ranges from −7.5 °C to −0.3 °C, and the places with the most snow are the warm ones.
