Yuzawa's 21 Ski Areas: Which One for the Best Snow?

Get on a train at Tokyo Station. Eighty minutes later you are at Echigo-Yuzawa, and at one of the ski areas you can walk from the platform to the lift.

Within 15 km of that station there are 21 ski areas. Four of them tie for sixth in the world for snowfall: they sit in the same weather-model grid cell, so all four read 712 cm.

This piece lines up the snowfall and the snow quality of each one, so you can choose by day.

The four in bold read the same 712 cm because one weather-model grid cell, about 30 km across, covers all four. These figures cannot tell them apart. The repeated 618 cm and 695 cm have the same cause.

Snowfall beside snow quality

The four world-top-ten ski areas rank 183rd, 206th, 216th and 237th of 397 for snow quality. The two best-quality ski areas in the valley — 11th and 12th in the whole country — are the two that get the least snow.

Nearly seven degrees of difference, in one valley, on the days it is snowing. The low ski areas get one and a half to two and a half metres more snow a season than Tashiro and Kagura, and receive it at almost exactly freezing.

What that means on the ground

Snow falling at −0.3 °C is heavy. It packs down, it sets, and if the temperature ticks up half a degree it becomes rain, which is why the low end of the valley (Ipponsugi, Ishiuchi Hanaoka) gets rain on 41% of winter days despite 695 cm a season and 12th place in the world. The middle of Japan’s 397 is 16%.

Snow falling at −7 °C is the thing people fly across the world for.

Yuzawa contains both, twelve kilometres apart, reachable on the same day from the same station.

So which one

If you have one day and want the best snow: the Kagura or Tashiro areas of Kagura ski resort. 11th and 12th in Japan for quality out of 397. They are the far end of the valley and the highest ground in it, and they hold their season later than anything below them.

If you have one day and want the least travel: GALA Yuzawa. You walk off the Shinkansen and onto the gondola. Quality is 192nd — the middle of the pack, but it is the only ski area in Japan with a Shinkansen station built into it.

If you are staying a week: base yourself low and ski high. The beds, the food and the station are at the bottom of the valley; the snow is at the top of it. That is an argument for a car or the local buses, not for picking a hotel on the mountain you intend to ski.

And do not choose by snowfall ranking. In this valley it is close to an inverse guide. Iwappara at 712 cm and =6th in the world ranks 183rd for quality; Tashiro at 447 cm and 113th in the world ranks 12th.

How this was measured

Snowfall is the twelve-winter mean from the ERA5 reanalysis, computed identically for all 3,069 ski areas on this site, and it runs low in Japanese mountains — treat the ranking as the reliable part.

Snow quality is our own index and deliberately excludes how much falls. It is built from the temperature on days when snow falls, how often it snows, how often it rains instead, and wind. Temperature is corrected to each ski area’s mid-elevation. The whole point of the measure is to disagree with the snowfall ranking where the two come apart, and across Japan they come apart at the extremes.

Distances are straight-line from GALA Yuzawa, not travel time — in this valley the roads follow the river, so ground distance is longer. Elevations are the highest point we measure at each ski area, sampled from the ground rather than taken from resort publications.

Two limits. A single grid cell covers several of these ski areas, so the ones close together share a rain-day figure and separate only on temperature, which is elevation-corrected. And all twenty-one have a quality figure, so the group values above cover the whole valley.
