The Deepest Snow You Can Sleep in an Old Japanese House Is Not Shirakawa-go
We measured the snow at seven villages where you can stay in traditional architecture, and how far each is from a lift. Shirakawa-go is 15.6 km from a middling ski hill. Shiozawa is 2.2 km from the world's 55th snowiest.
Staying in an old Japanese house in deep snow is a specific thing people want, and the search results for it are all photographs of Shirakawa-go.
Shirakawa-go is genuinely spectacular and it is built the way it is because of the snow load. It is also fifteen kilometres from the nearest chairlift, and that chairlift is 296th in the world for snowfall.
So we measured the whole set: how deep the snow actually gets at each village, and how far it is to a lift.
Seven villages, measured

Shiozawa is the answer and nobody says so
Shiozawa holds 201 cm in a normal winter and has a lift 2.2 km away. Château Shiozawa is 55th in the world for snowfall at 547 cm a season. Muika Snow Resort is 3.6 km out. Joetsu Kokusai, 18th in the world at 686 cm, is 4.9 km away, on the same rail line.
The street is Boku-no-tōri, a restored stretch of the old Mikuni highway through the snow country, with the deep eaves and covered walkways that towns in Niigata built so the road stays usable when the snow is over your head.
It is not a World Heritage site and it is not on the international circuit. On the two things this article measures — snow, and getting to a lift — it beats Shirakawa-go on both, by a lot.
The magariya are not a snow building
Tōno’s median deepest snow is 16 cm.
Tōno is the home of the magariya, the L-shaped farmhouse that puts the family and the horses under one roof, and it is the setting of the Tōno Monogatari folk tales. It is one of the most evocative places to stay in a traditional house in Japan.
It is also, on this measurement, the second-driest place in this table. Only Miyama, which is here as the control, holds less snow. The magariya’s L-shape is about horses and about wind, not about snow load. Iwate’s snow is in the mountains to the west — Geto Kogen is 164th in the world and 55 km away, which is not a village stay, it is a different trip.
This is the pattern the table keeps showing. Traditional Japanese architecture is not a snow-country phenomenon that happens to be photographed in winter. Only one of these forms, the gasshō roof, is a direct answer to snow.
What Shirakawa-go is and is not
162 cm, and the snow arrives at almost exactly 0°C, which is the heaviest snow can fall — that is the whole reason for the 60-degree roof.
But the skiing near it is ordinary. Hida Kawai is 15.6 km and 296th; Hakusan Ichirino at 17.6 km is genuinely good at 65th in the world; Hakusan Seymour is 21.6 km and 81st. In deep winter, in that terrain, those are not short drives.
Shirakawa-go is a place to go and look at, and Shiozawa is a place to stay and ski from. Both are valid trips. They are not the same trip and the search results treat them as if they were.
Gokayama, an hour north, gets 133 cm and sits 13.1 km from IOX-Arosa, 387th. It is far quieter than Shirakawa-go and the two hamlets are small enough that a winter evening there is genuinely still.
Ouchi-juku is the middle option
63 cm, thatched roofs on a single unpaved street, and Ski Resort Tenei 12.6 km away at 782nd. Enough snow to look like the photographs in midwinter, without the depth of the Niigata side.
Its snow arrives at −2.1°C, colder than Shirakawa-go’s, which is why it looks powdery in pictures and Shirakawa-go looks like it is under wet concrete.
Where these are actually booked
Whole-house and traditional-house stays sit awkwardly across the booking platforms, and no single one covers them.
The Japanese travel sites list the licensed operators. Rakuten Travel and Booking.com both carry whole-house categories, and everything on them holds either a ryokan licence or a registered minpaku number. If you want a booking you can hold someone to, start there — the lodging search on this page runs against them.
Airbnb works the other way round. Its model is private owners listing whole houses, where the Japanese travel sites are built around accommodation businesses — so it is worth checking separately for privately owned kominka. We have no commercial relationship with Airbnb and cannot show listings from it here, since its terms do not permit that, but leaving it out of the answer would be dishonest.
Some of the best ones are not on any platform. Guest houses in villages this size are family-operated, and some take bookings only by phone or through a local tourism association. If a village looks empty on the international sites, check the village’s own site before concluding there is nowhere to stay.
One legal note worth having: a paid stay in a private house in Japan requires either a ryokan licence or a minpaku registration number, and registered properties display the number. It is a reasonable thing to look for.
Where this is weak
Snow depth is modelled. ERA5 runs on a 10–30 km grid that flattens terrain, so each figure represents the valley rather than the street. Gokayama’s two hamlets, four kilometres apart, share a cell and return one number.
Three winters. Shirakawa-go ranged from 93 cm to 223 cm across them, and Shiozawa from 142 cm to 290 cm. A median is not a promise.
Distance is straight-line. In mountains in winter, road distance is longer and drive time is longer again. Treat the kilometre figures as a ranking, not a schedule.
We did not measure the houses. Which villages have stays available, how many, and what they cost is not in our data. The table says where the snow and the lifts are; it does not say a room exists.
Not every traditional-architecture village is here. Seven is a sample. The set was chosen to span the forms — gasshō, thatch, post-town, magariya — rather than to be complete.
How this was measured
Daily maximum snow depth from Open-Meteo historical data on the ERA5 reanalysis, 1 December to 31 March across the last three completed winters, at each village’s coordinates from OpenStreetMap. “Deepest snow” is the maximum reached in a season, taken as the median of the three.
Distances are great-circle from the village to the ski area’s coordinates in our own resort data. World snowfall ranks are the site’s ranking of 3,108 ski areas by mean seasonal snowfall.
The script is scripts/measure-point-snow.mjs in this site’s repository, with the coordinates written into it, so these figures can be reproduced and corrected.
