Yokote's Snow Hut Festival Had 6 cm of Snow in One of the Last Three Years
Japan's winter festivals are photographed in deep snow. We measured what was actually on the ground during each one across three winters — and checked the 580-year record of a frozen lake that has now failed eight years running.
Every photograph of a Japanese winter festival shows deep snow. Lanterns in a snowbank at Hirosaki, ice huts at Yokote, sculptures towering over a Sapporo street.
The photographs are real. They are also selected from the good years.
We measured snow depth at each festival site during the days the festival normally runs, across the last three winters, from the same reanalysis we use for everything else on this site.

The one number that should change a booking
Yokote’s median is 77 cm. Its worst of the last three years is 6 cm.
Yokote’s festival is kamakura — snow huts, large enough to sit inside, with children serving sweet sake to visitors. It is one of the most photographed winter events in Japan and it needs a specific raw material.
Six centimetres is not a hut. The town builds them anyway, trucking snow in when it has to, but the valley full of glowing snow domes that appears in every photograph is not something a February booking guarantees.
Nothing else on the list swings like that. Tokamachi’s worst year still had 69 cm; Sapporo’s 60; Hirosaki’s 61. Yokote is the one where the festival and the weather can genuinely part company.
Sapporo has the least snow and the best sculptures
Read the last two columns together and something odd appears.
Sapporo sits near the bottom of the depth table at 75 cm and near the top of the cold table at −4.8°C. Asahikawa, two hours north, is colder still at −7.2°C on 79 cm. Tokamachi has nearly twice Sapporo’s snow and sits above freezing at +1.3°C.
That inverts the intuition, and it explains what each festival can build.
Snow sculpture needs cold, not depth. A ten-metre carving stands because the temperature never lets it soften; the snow itself is trucked in from wherever it is convenient. Sapporo and Asahikawa have the cold, which is why they are the sculpture festivals.
Snow huts need depth, not cold. A kamakura is packed from what is already there, and it survives a few degrees above freezing perfectly well. Yokote and Tokamachi are on the Sea of Japan side, warmer and far deeper — which is why they are the huts-and-tunnels festivals.
The festivals did not choose their formats by taste. They chose what their weather makes possible.
The 580-year record that has stopped
Lake Suwa in Nagano freezes, and when it does, the ice buckles into a ridge across the surface. It is called omiwatari — the crossing of the god — and the shrine at Yatsurugi has recorded whether it appeared, and on what date, since 1443.
That makes it one of the longest continuous environmental records kept anywhere by anyone.

It has now failed to appear eight winters running — matching the longest gap in the entire record, from 1507 to 1514 (tenki.jp / Japan Weather Association; Weathernews).
Our own figure for the lake is consistent and unremarkable: mean temperature of +0.2°C across mid-January to mid-February. A lake does not build a pressure ridge at that temperature.
So do not plan a trip around seeing it. For most of six centuries that would have been reasonable advice; it is not any more. What is worth seeing is the record itself — the shrine still performs the observation every winter, including in the years when the answer is that the lake stayed open.
It also belongs alongside what the climate modelling says about Japan’s ski areas. That work projects forward from models. Suwa is the same story measured backwards, by hand, for 580 years.
Choosing a festival by what you want
If you want guaranteed deep snow: Tokamachi. 145 cm median, 69 cm in its worst recent year, and it sits in the prefecture that holds 39 of Japan’s 61 entries in the world’s snowiest hundred.
If you want sculpture and hard cold: Sapporo or Asahikawa. Dress for −5°C to −7°C as a daily mean, which means considerably colder at night.
If you want the lantern-lit castle: Hirosaki, at 89 cm and −2.7°C — the best combination of reliable depth and cold on this list.
If you want fire rather than snow: Nozawa’s Dosojin festival on 15 January, where two age-groups of village men defend and attack a wooden shrine with burning torches. 67 cm underfoot, and the only event here that does not depend on the snow at all.
What this does not tell you
Festival dates move. Most of these run on fixed calendar dates or fixed weekends, but not all, and organisers change them. We used the customary window for each. Confirm the actual dates with the organiser before booking anything — this article is about snow, not schedules.
Three winters is a small sample. Yokote’s 6 cm year tells you such a year is possible, not how often it happens. A longer record would put a probability on it; we have three seasons.
Depth is modelled, not measured in the town square. ERA5 works on a 10–30 km grid that flattens terrain, so the figure represents the area rather than the festival site. Comparisons between festivals are sound; a single number is approximate.
Festivals import snow. Sapporo trucks in thousands of tonnes; Yokote does the same in lean years. What we measured is what nature provided, which is a different question from what you will see.
How this was measured
Daily maximum snow depth and mean temperature from Open-Meteo historical data on the ERA5 reanalysis, at each festival’s coordinates, for its customary dates in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Median, minimum and maximum are across those three years.
The Lake Suwa occurrence rates are from the Yatsurugi shrine’s record as reported by the Japan Weather Association, linked above; they are not our figures. Our only contribution there is the mean winter temperature at the lake.
