Where the snow falls / Planning a trip
Ski Japan from Hong Kong: Hokkaido, Tokyo or Osaka?
Hong Kong has direct Cathay Pacific flights to Sapporo, Tokyo and Osaka. Hokkaido for dry snow; Tokyo for Nagano and Niigata, where the snowiest resorts average 414–450 cm; Osaka for the Kansai hills.
Hong Kong is unusually well placed for a Japanese ski trip: direct flights go to three different snow regions, not one. Fly to Sapporo for Hokkaido’s dry snow and short transfers, to Tokyo for the deeper snow of Nagano and Niigata, or to Osaka for the lower Kansai hills. The right airport depends on which snow you want, not on which flight is cheapest.
Three gateways, three kinds of snow
Cathay Pacific’s official route pages list Hong Kong–Sapporo, Hong Kong–Tokyo and Hong Kong–Osaka flights. The Tokyo page shows both Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT); the Osaka page shows Kansai (KIX).
| Airport | Code | Snow region it serves | Well-known areas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapporo New Chitose | CTS | Hokkaido | Niseko, Kiroro, Sapporo Kokusai |
| Tokyo Haneda / Narita | HND / NRT | Nagano and Niigata | Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen |
| Osaka Kansai | KIX | Kansai and Chubu | Hachikita, Okuibuki |
Timetables change with the season. Check the official page for your dates and for whether a particular service is winter-only.
Hokkaido: less volume, drier snow
Hokkaido’s advantage is not the number of centimetres. It is that the snow stays cold and dry, and that the main areas are close to New Chitose. Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai average 331 cm a winter in our 12-season data; Niseko Grand Hirafu averages 289 cm.
If you want the shortest transfer from the airport, the distances and the full comparison are in the Taipei guide’s New Chitose table. We do not repeat that table here.
Honshu: more snow by volume
Tokyo’s airports open a different scale of snowfall. Nozawa Onsen averages 450 cm a winter in our data, Hakuba Happo-One 414 cm, and Hakuba Cortina 635 cm. That is more snow by volume than any of the Hokkaido areas above. Shiga Kogen is lower in our figures at 255 cm, but it is a high, cold plateau with a long season.
The trade-off is the transfer. Nagano and Niigata are further from the airport, and the last part of the journey is by road; we have not given times because we have not checked them against an official source. Hokkaido’s snow is drier; Honshu’s is deeper.
Osaka: the lower, warmer hills
Kansai’s ski areas sit lower than Nagano’s and Niigata’s. Hachikita averages 235 cm and Okuibuki 194 cm in our data. They are convenient from Osaka, but they are not a substitute for Nagano or Niigata if deep snow is the point of the trip.
Which airport to book
- Fly to CTS if you want dry snow, short transfers and Niseko, Kiroro or Sapporo Kokusai.
- Fly to HND or NRT if you want the deepest snow by volume: Nozawa, Hakuba, Myoko or Shiga Kogen.
- Fly to KIX if you are going to Osaka or Kyoto and want a day or two on the Kansai hills.
- Do not choose by flight price alone. A cheaper flight to Osaka can cost more in time than a direct flight to Sapporo if your destination is Hokkaido.
Before booking
Check two things before you pay: when the area opens and what has fallen. We list dates confirmed from official announcements in the 2026/27 opening dates, and where it is snowing now is updated daily.
Practical questions
Is Hong Kong–Sapporo year-round? The airline’s timetable decides that. Check the official page for your dates.
Is Tokyo or Sapporo closer to the snow? Both are direct flights. Sapporo is closer to the Hokkaido areas; Tokyo is the gateway to Nagano and Niigata, which are further from the airport.
Which has more snow, Hokkaido or Honshu? Honshu’s Sea of Japan side has more by volume in our data. Hokkaido’s snow is colder and drier. Our snow-quality ranking compares them on the same measurements.
How many ski areas does the site cover? 3,069 worldwide, including 397 in Japan. The complete ranking is at the world snowfall ranking.
About the numbers
Snowfall figures are December–March totals from ERA5, the reanalysis distributed by Open-Meteo, averaged across 2014/15–2025/26. They are modelled, not measured at the resort. In Japanese mountains the model captures roughly 60% of gauge totals; Hokkaido is lower still. Read the figures as a comparison between places, not as a snow forecast. Airport codes come from the airlines’ official route pages. We have not given transfer times because we have not checked them against an official source.

Questions
Can I fly direct from Hong Kong to a Japanese ski airport?
Cathay Pacific's official route pages list Hong Kong–Sapporo, Hong Kong–Tokyo and Hong Kong–Osaka flights. Check the page for your dates; timetables change with the season.
Should I fly to Sapporo or Tokyo for skiing?
Fly to Sapporo (New Chitose) for Hokkaido's dry snow and short transfers to Niseko, Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai. Fly to Tokyo for Nagano and Niigata, where Nozawa Onsen averages 450 cm and Hakuba Happo-One 414 cm in our data, more snow by volume than the Hokkaido areas.
Which airport serves the Kansai ski areas?
Osaka Kansai (KIX). Cathay Pacific lists Hong Kong–Osaka flights. The Kansai hills are lower and receive less snow than Nagano or Niigata; Hachikita averages 235 cm and Okuibuki 194 cm in our data.
Are the flights year-round?
The airline's timetable decides that. Check the official route page for your dates and for whether a service is winter-only.
