45 of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains Have a Ski Area. Height Is Not What Decides It.

We matched Fukada's 1964 list against 395 Japanese ski areas. Above 2,500 m, 88% of the volcanoes have a ski area within 10 km and only 19% of everything else does — and no lift on the list reaches a summit but one.

In 1964 the writer Kyūya Fukada published a personal selection of a hundred Japanese mountains. It became the country’s most-followed hiking list — people spend decades working through it, and the phrase turns up on trail signs, station posters and bus timetables all over Japan.

It is a summer list. Every mountain on it is chosen and described as something you walk up between June and October.

Nobody seems to have asked the winter question. We hold the location of 395 Japanese ski areas, so we can: how many of the hundred have skiing on them, and what decides which ones do?

The answer is not height, and that turns out to be the interesting part.

Forty-five of the hundred

Forty-five of the hundred have a ski area within 10 km. The middle value for the whole list is 12.6 km.

That is a much closer relationship than the list’s own framing suggests. Mount Gassan, Mount Tanigawa, Mount Bandai, Mount Iwaki, Daisen — these are famous as summer climbs, and each has lifts running at the foot of the same slope.

Read the middle column down. It climbs, peaks in the 2,000–2,500 m band, and then falls away sharply at exactly the elevations where you would expect skiing to be best.

Japan’s thirteen highest famous mountains are the second-worst served on the list. Only the ones under 1,500 m — mostly southern and coastal, where it barely snows — do worse.

Something other than height is doing the work.

It is how the mountain was built

Split the hundred by origin — volcanic cones on one side, folded and faulted ranges on the other:

The volcanoes are lower on average and far better served.

And when you hold height constant, the gap becomes extreme. Among the thirty-four famous mountains above 2,500 m:

Seven of Japan’s eight high volcanoes have skiing on them. Twenty-one of its twenty-six other high mountains have nothing within 10 km.

Why a volcano gets a lift and a mountain range does not

A stratovolcano is a cone standing more or less on its own, with a long, even apron running down from the summit in every direction. That shape is what a road wants. You can climb it in a steady spiral without crossing anything, and once a road is high on the mountain, lifts follow.

Mount Norikura, Mount Ontake, Mount Fuji, Mount Asama, Mount Nikkō-Shirane, Mount Tateshina, the Yatsugatake group — all above 2,500 m, all with a ski area inside 10 km, all cones.

A folded range is the opposite shape. The high ground is a continuous wall, and the valleys between the walls are narrow, steep and long. There is nowhere for a road to gain height except up a gorge, and Japan’s national parks have kept most of those gorges roadless.

That is the entire Southern Alps. Mount Kita is Japan’s second-highest mountain at 3,193 m; the nearest lift is 26.4 km away. Mount Hijiri is 42.0 km from one. The five highest summits of that range share a single distant ski area, over in a different valley.

The pattern is not about snow, or steepness, or how good the skiing would be. It is about whether a vehicle can get up there.

The five exceptions prove it

Five non-volcanic mountains above 2,500 m do have a ski area within 10 km:

Three sit above the Hakuba valley and two above Komagane. Both are broad, flat-floored valleys running directly alongside a high range — the one landform that lets a road sit close to big mountains without having to climb through them.

The exceptions are not about the mountains. They are about the valleys next to them.

No lift takes you to the top — with one exception

For the forty-four mountains where a nearby ski area publishes a top elevation, we compared the highest lift within 10 km against the summit:

The median lift stops 636 m below the summit. Even where the ski area sits at the foot of the mountain, the last stretch is yours to earn.

There is exactly one place on the hundred where the lift goes over the top. Shiga Kogen’s Shibutoge, at 2,258 m, is the highest lift-served point in Japan — 98 m above the summit of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. Yokoteyama, next door, clears it too.

Everywhere else the gap is real: 175 m at Mount Azuma, 517 m at Mount Tanigawa, 854 m at Daisen.

What we are not going to tell you

We are not putting a snowfall figure on these mountains, and it is worth saying why.

Our snowfall numbers come from a global weather model. We recently checked it against 63 Japan Meteorological Agency stations and found it returns 56% of what the ground measures — and above 700 m it returns 41%, because the model averages away the terrain that makes mountain snow in the first place.

The hundred famous mountains have a median height of about 2,100 m. They sit squarely in the range where we have measured our own data to be least trustworthy. Publishing centimetres for them would mean printing numbers we have already shown do not hold up.

The distances on this page are geography, and geography we can measure. Snowfall on a 3,000 m summit is not.

And one thing this page is not

A ski area within 10 km does not mean you can ski the mountain. Resort boundaries end well below these summits, the terrain above is avalanche country, and reaching a peak like Mount Shirouma in winter is mountaineering, not a lift ride. What the distance tells you is where the infrastructure is — not what you are qualified to do from it.

If you want to stand on a famous summit and also ski, the honest version is: ski the resort, and climb the mountain in summer like everyone else on the list.

How this was measured

The hundred mountains come from Wikidata’s entries linked to Fukada’s book, which supply each summit’s coordinates, elevation and geological classification. We took only those facts. The book’s text is still in copyright — Fukada died in 1971 — so nothing here draws on his descriptions or his reasoning for choosing a mountain.

Wikidata lists 101 entries because Mount Hakkyō is recorded separately from Mount Ōmine, of which it is the high point. Fukada’s list has one entry there, so we do too.

Distances are straight-line from summit to the centre of the ski area, against the 395 Japanese ski areas on this site. Straight-line distance is not travel time. A ski area 3 km from a summit may be an hour’s drive around a ridge, and in a few cases it is on the other side of the mountain entirely. Ski area top elevations are drawn from OpenStreetMap rather than resort publications, so they will not always match a resort’s own figure.

The volcanic classification is Wikidata’s, covering volcanoes, calderas and lava domes. It is a coarse split — some of the “everything else” group has volcanic rock in it, and a few dormant cones are worn enough that the cone shape has gone. A finer classification would likely sharpen the pattern rather than soften it, since the mechanism here is the shape of the mountain, and the clearest cones are the ones most obviously tagged.

One last limit worth stating. Fukada’s hundred is one person’s selection from 1964, not a ranking of Japanese mountains. He left out peaks that others would include and included some for reasons of his own. We use the list because it is the reference set that Japanese hikers actually navigate by — not because it settles which mountains matter.
