The 47 ski areas in Niigata get 593 cm of snow in a typical season, taking the middle value. That makes it the snowiest of the 31 prefectures with ski areas, well above the national median of 268 cm. The snowiest is Okutadami Maruyama Ski Resort at 796 cm, 1st in Japan.
Month by month, the most snow falls in January. By March it is down to 38% of January. That is a steeper fall than the national median of 55%: the snow here is concentrated in the first half of winter. For skiing, though, the amount matters more than the share: March brings 76 cm here, more than the national median of 45 cm.
On the quality of what falls: 32% of winter days bring rain, snow falls at an average of −1.5 °C, and 43 days a winter deliver 5 cm or more (all prefecture medians). That is more rain than the national median of 16%, and it is warmer than the country as a whole. The best snow-quality score in the prefecture belongs to Kagura Area, 11th of 395 in Japan.
