Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo and you step off at Echigo-Yuzawa, with ski areas clustered around the station. GALA Yuzawa is joined to its own Shinkansen station, open only in winter. Myoko, in the west, is a bus ride up from Joetsumyoko Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Snow deepens the farther you go inland, from the coast to the plains to the mountains.
