Seki Onsen, designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring together with Tsubame Onsen in 1972, has its ski slopes inside the village itself, so the inns and the runs share the same ground. What we have measured at Seki Onsen Ski Area
- Which Ski Resort Gets the Most Snow in the World? We measured snowfall at all 3,069 ski areas on earth the same way. The top two both shut in winter because they get too much snow: a Norwegian glacier at 783 cm that opens in May, and Okutadami Maruyama in Niigata at 765 cm. 46 of the top 100 are Japanese.
- Is March a Good Time to Ski in Japan? Across twelve winters at 397 Japanese ski areas, March delivers 46 cm against January's 81 cm. Niigata keeps 38% of its January; Hokkaido keeps 69%. But Niigata's 38% is 76 cm and Hokkaido's 69% is 41 cm, which reverses the advice.
- Japan or the Alps for March Skiing? It Depends on the Altitude Over the same twelve winters at 397 Japanese and 963 Alpine ski areas, March delivers 57% of January's snowfall in Japan and 84% in the Alps. Matching the altitudes does not close the gap. What closes it is how much snow Japan starts with.
- When Is There Snow at Japan's Hot Spring Towns? If you want to sit in an outdoor bath with snow on the ground, the question is when, not just where. We worked out snow depth at 14 Japanese hot spring towns over the last three winters from weather-model data: when it arrives, when it goes, and how many days it is actually deep.
- A Singapore Fund Is Spending ¥200 Billion on Myoko. We Measured What It Bought. Patience Capital Group bought Madarao in 2022 and Myoko Suginohara in 2023, and will spend about ¥200 billion over ten years building Japan's Aspen. The snow record says it picked the right valley: Madarao is 129th in the world and Seki Onsen, 13 km away, is 19th, while Niseko is 526th. The catch is rain.
