The Asahidake Ropeway rises from Asahidake Onsen to Sugatami Station, and skiers descend by courses laid out on the mountainside. The ropeway's official site asks visitors to come with winter-mountain equipment and a plan, and to check the weather and avalanche forecasts first. What we have measured at Asahidake
- Which Japanese Ski Areas Keep Their Snow at 4°C of Warming? New research from Hokkaido University puts 7 ski areas on stable natural snow at 4°C. Our own data on 397 Japanese ski areas says 17 of the ranking's top 20 are on the wrong side of that line.
- How Close to Rain Does the Snow Fall? Japan, the Alps and North America Compared We measured how close to freezing the snow already falls at 240 randomly drawn resorts in the Alps and North America, and at all 397 in Japan. Japan is not one place: Honshu is among the most exposed, Hokkaido among the least.
- Why Is Hokkaido's Snow Colder? Latitude, Elevation and Rain Across 397 Japanese ski areas, elevation sets the temperature and latitude does almost nothing to it — inside Honshu, going north is worth nothing at all. What latitude buys instead is the absence of rain.
- Hokkaido Wine Is Sold on Its Temperature Swing. The Swing Is Among Japan's Smallest. Yoichi's heat sum sits between Mosel and Burgundy, which is why the Pinot Noir works. Its day-night range in the ripening weeks is 6.6°C against Burgundy's 9.6 — and the axis where Japan and Europe genuinely part company is rain.
