Les Rousses is a ski area in France. The terrain spans roughly 1174–1174 m above sea level. The mapped ski area is about 14 km across, corner to corner. The map shows 95 marked runs and 24 lifts inside the ski area, totalling about 32 km of piste. Averaged over the last twelve winters, the ERA5 reanalysis gives it 237 cm of snowfall a season, 810th (tied) of the 3,069 ski areas we measure worldwide. In Japan we can check our figures against 234 weather stations. Outside Japan there is nothing to check them against, so we do not print a number we have not verified. Counted across 2,888 ski areas: drag lifts are 51% of Swiss lifts, 50% of French, 75% of Swedish — and 1% of Japanese. For a snowboarder that is the difference between 49% of lifts being comfortable and 99%.
- A Black Run in Colorado and a Black Run in Austria Are Not the Same Thing. The Maps Prove It. Across 2,888 ski areas: 39% of American runs are graded advanced or harder, and 9% of Austrian ones. Nobody thinks Austria is four times gentler. The grades are measuring different things.

What Japan has instead is 25 cm of seasonal snow for every kilometre of run — more than two and a half times France and three times the United States.
